Coaches wearing their college letter sweaters
Football Archaeology with a cool look at old coaches wearing their college gear instead of their team's colors.
You know that anything to do with a letterman’s sweater is pure clickbait for me, but the great Football Archaeology SubStack hit a sweet spot.
I know I’ve seen examples of this phenomenon in Nebraska team photos, and I was able to round up a few pretty quickly from my files.
In 1921, Hastings Tiger coach Dick Newman posed for the Tiger yearbook with his University of Nebraska sweater
Around 1920, the Comstock Pirate head man posed for a great team photo on the school steps with a Y on his chest.
Also in 1920, Alliance Coach Frank Prince posed for his yearbook shot in his Hastings College sweater. Think those sweet socks are Alliance blue or Bronco crimson?
My favorite old letter sweater photo doesn’t fit this pattern, but it is too good not to post. Beatrice claims a 1894 state championship, which they proclaimed on a banner made for the photo shoot. Thinking ahead, they realized they didn’t put Beatrice on their banner. Easily fixed. Perfect!
